Zeny Bagatsing Ogrisseg E-RYT 500, Director and Owner Hawaii School of Yoga, has been teaching Yoga since 2003. With mixed heritage including Indian (Punjabi), Spanish, Filipino and German, she was exposed to many different cultures growing up in the Philippines. Her first yoga experience was listening to her mom chanting “Om” as a child.
Being of Indian descent, (Zeny’s family has roots in Northwest India, in Punjab) Zeny is passionate about her Indian heritage and devotedly studies every aspect of Indian culture and spirituality. Zeny’s teachings are noted for depth in yoga philosophy, history and spiritual richness. Her approach to teaching is to create a sacred space for her students that allows them to explore those aspects of Yoga and Tantra that resonates most deeply with them. “For some the asanas are a gateway into the deeper teachings of Yoga, for others they really love mantra or mediation. My role is to present Tantric Yoga as it is and encourage my students to explore all the wonderful aspects of yoga.” She believes in preserving the traditional values of Yoga and Tantra while making them as inclusive as possible. “Yoga does not need to be re-invented or branded, it just needs to be explored and mastered. While the narrative of Yoga’s origins belongs to the Indian people, it’s applications and benefits are for all of mankind to enjoy.
Music is a big part of Zeny's life and personal practice, and she infuses her classes with the healing power of music, especially Vedic and Tantric Sanskrit mantras. A devotee of Shiva, her favorite chant is the Rudram. A self-taught musician she plays the piano, harp, harmonium, Indian Singing Bowls. tanpura and ukelele. She considers her voice as her main instrument started singing in choirs and church at the age of 7. Her passion for music led her to study Music Theory, Voice and Piano in college. She is pursuing a degree in Music Production and Sound Engineering with Berklee College of Music. She has been greatly inspired by Dr. Nur with whom she has studied Sonic Metaphysics, Sonic Theology and Ethnomusicology. She leads regular kirtan and chanting circles in Oahu.
Zeny’s has traveled extensively all over India, visiting family, and studying Yoga, Traditional Tantra, Mantras, Indian Classical Music and Ayurveda with several Indian Gurus. She practices and studies Sri Vidya Tantra under Gurumata Sri La Sri Vidyambasaraswati and Guru Karunamaya, Cidambaram Saivism with Raja Dikshitar, Tibetan Buddhism and Bonpo with Ratsa Geshe Tenzin Dargye Rinpoche, Carnatic Vocal Music with Devki Nandakumar, Mantra with Russill Paul, recording artist and author of the book “The Yoga of Sound” and Ayurveda with Dr. Kodaikanal and Dr. Kshirsagar.
